The Black Knights of VMFA-314 have a storied history spanning more than eight decades of service to the United States Marine Corps. From World War II to the present day, the squadron has participated in every major conflict, evolving with each generation of aircraft while maintaining the proud traditions that define the Black Knights.
Timeline
Squadron Established
Marine Fighting Squadron 314 (VMF-314) was commissioned on October 1, 1943, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.
World War II
VMF-314 deployed to the Pacific Theater, flying F4U Corsairs in combat operations against Japanese forces.
Korean War
The squadron flew combat missions during the Korean War, providing close air support and aerial combat operations.
Vietnam War
VMF(A)-314 deployed multiple times to Vietnam, flying combat missions in support of ground forces and conducting air-to-air combat.
Transition to F/A-18
The Black Knights transitioned from the A-4 Skyhawk to the F/A-18 Hornet, becoming one of the first Marine squadrons to operate the new aircraft.
Desert Storm
VMFA-314 participated in Operation Desert Storm, flying combat missions in support of coalition forces liberating Kuwait.
Iraqi Freedom
The squadron deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, conducting combat operations and close air support missions.
F-35C Transition Begins
VMFA-314 began its transition from the F/A-18C Hornet to the F-35C Lightning II, marking a new era for the squadron.
First F-35C Deployment
The Black Knights completed their historic first operational deployment with the F-35C Lightning II aboard USS Abraham Lincoln.
Continuing the Legacy
Today, VMFA-314 continues to operate from MCAS Miramar, California, ready to deploy in defense of the nation.
